Because sometimes writers do things called “interviews” where they talk to someone about the characters they write, and what they were trying to accomplish with them, and the person they’re talking to writes it down or films it and then puts it on the internet so other people can know what the writer said. It’s really cool, you should google it sometime.

I hope you don’t mind Quinn, but I’m butting in on this post because the entire point of it is still being glaringly missed.
When it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter whether it’s Kylo Ren, Loki, or even Cersei fucking Lannister—the point trying to be made here is that people can sympathize with villains, just like people can hate them. All throughout this argument, Quinn has made it very clear you aren’t obligated to sympathize with them. That’s not the point of the post. The point is Quinn wants the same consideration in return. Nobody is obligated to hate them, either. Logically, people aren’t sympathizing with Kylo, Loki or Cersei because they committed patricide, have megalomaniac tendencies, or are controlling narcissists, but because they can identify with an element in their backstory such as being groomed/manipulated by an adult, having abandonment issues, having second child syndrome, suffering from domestic and/or sexual abuse, etc. It doesn’t mean “villain sympathizers” are justifying or excusing said villains, but finding something they can relate with in the character. Which, wild concept, is probably done on purpose by the writers. A villain with zero redeemable and/or relatable qualities lessens (necessary) conflict in stories, believe it or not. Unless, it’s like, a Scooby-Doo episode, which seems to have the white and black viewpoint most have on this godforsaken site.
Further more, does anyone miss the good old days when we didn’t need a reason to like or dislike a villain or even a character in general? Nobody should have to whip out their Sob Story Credentials™ or list a dozen reasons to justify their opinion.

This entire post has devolved into debates over whether certain characters are sympathetic or not, or whether people should be “allowed” to like them, when the point here is less about any one character and more about the fact that people shouldn’t HAVE to justify liking a character, this idea that fans can just go around policing other fans’ character preferences is so profoundly ridiculous, it’s insane.
As to that overused gif: Hate to break it to yall but motive actually matters. Context matters. Both legally and morally.
Just because I sympathize with the character or even identify with them doesn’t mean I think everything they did was okay.
